On May 16,ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, citing sources, that the San Francisco 49ers committed to Brock Purdy as their franchise quarterback. According to the report, both sides agreed to a five-year, $265 million deal, including $181 million in overall guaranteed money.

With Purdy now under center for the foreseeable future,CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson did his first mock draft of the season on September 1 now that Week 1 in college football is in the books. Regarding the 49ers, Wilson sees San Francisco adding protection for Purdy.

It’s too early to know the 49ers’ exact offseason needs, but ensuring Brock Purdy has protection remains a safe bet. So, which offensive lineman could land in San Francisco? Wilson has San Francisco selecting Auburn’s Xavier Chaplin at No. 26.

“In pass protection, Chaplin flashes power and athleticism, anchors well, though he’ll need to tidy up his footwork at the next level,” Wilson wrote. “He’s a powerful run-blocker who excels at combo blocks and locking up second-level defenders.”

Xavier Chaplin Will Need to Improve

Chaplin transferred to Auburn from Virginia Tech this offseason and now faces SEC pass rushes. Moreover, his draft stock rises if he holds his own.

Nonetheless,in a June 10 article from CBS Sports, anonymous scouts and an Auburn source weighed in on where they stand on the offensive lineman heading into the 2025 college football season.

“When you see this kid in person, it’s like Laremy Tunsil,” an Auburn source said. “He’s a freak. He’s not as wide as Laremy but you’re talking about the same body mass ratio and all. He’s a legit NFL tackle. For sure. He’s the best-looking offensive lineman that’s walked through our doors in the last three years. He’s legit and a stud.”

Still, one scout doesn’t see Chaplin going in the first round. As a result, hemust display that he’s a first-round talent this season at Auburn.

“Love the frame and definitely uses his length vs. speed rushers and as an edge setter in the run game but thought he was a waist bender too often and his awareness for stunts and blitzes needs to improve,” a scout said. “Has the tools to be a mid-round pick but still raw to me.”

Brock Purdy Looks to Stay the Same After Lucrative Contract

Whether the 49ers select Chaplin to protect Purdy long-term is still a ways away. Nonetheless, the 49ers signal caller notedin a September 2 article from NBC Sports Bay Area & California that he intends to keep everything the same that’s allowed him to find success in the league despite being the final player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

“My mindset of how I prepare for a game, how I practice, how I lead guys, I’m going to continue to do what’s gotten me here, and that’s being real, being authentic and going all-in,” Purdy told NBC Sports Bay Area.

Every offseason decision for the 49ers will now need to center around Purdy. The franchise must ensure that it puts weapons and protection around him, which can help it win a Super Bowl.
