A strange roster move, team captains and season preview stories

We've made it! A new NFL season starts this week, including the Saints' regular-season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at the Superdome. We've got plenty to get you ready:

A head-scratching roster move: On Monday, the Saints made a surprising cut of longtime safety J.T. Gray. Gray was known for being a special teams ace and had even been a team captain for the past few years. On Tuesday, the team signed third-string quarterback Jake Haener back to the active roster to take Gray's spot.

Oh captains, my captains: With Gray and retired quarterback Derek Carr no longer with the Saints, they were guaranteed to have a new-look group of captains. Demario Davis and Cam Jordan are back, of course, but check out who completes the group of 2025 team captains.

Preview stories: We've started to roll out our season preview series for the 2025 Saints, which includes long-form stories on some of the big themes for the new season. So far we've seen Luke Johnson's dive into defensive coordinator Brandon Staley and his background, and Matt Paras' analysis of why national expectations are so low for the Saints. More to come this week!

Four days and counting till Saints football returns.

Cheers,

Zach Ewing
