Jason Licht just shut down a huge 2026 Bucs free agency worry for good

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made retaining some of their key stars part of their priority. In fact, their main moves in free agency were to re-sign wide receiver Chris Godwin, pass rusher Hasson Reddick, and linebacker Lavonte David. Other than that, the Buccaneers mostly built the rest of their roster through the NFL Draft.

The Buccaneers have a solid track record of building up their offensive line, as evidenced by their selection of Tristan Wirfs. But on Tuesday, the Buccaneers made sure one of their key, young offensive linemen didn't hit free agency, just days before their 2025 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times was first to report that the Buccaneers and right tackle Luke Goedeke agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension. Goedeke was set to hit free agency at the start of the 2026 league year.

As for the financial details, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo report that Goedeke is getting $90 million total over the four years, meaning he'll make $22.5 million per season. Also, $50 million is guaranteed for Goedeke.

The #Bucs have agreed to terms with their standout OT Luke Goedeke, as he gets a 4-year, $90M deal — $22.5M APY — that includes $50M guaranteed, per me and @MikeGarafolo.

Buccaneers sign OT Luke Goedeke to four-year, $90 million contract extension

As NFL fans know, it's hard to find standout offensive tackles to help keep the quarterback upright. So, if they luck into one through the NFL Draft, it's best to ensure they are locked into a long-term contract as soon as possible. So, the Buccaneers did just that, ensuring Goedeke didn't hit the open market next March.

Goedeke was a second-round pick by Tampa Bay out of Central Michigan. Initially, he primarily played at left guard during his rookie season, and it didn't work out too well. He allowed 22 total pressures, three quarterback hits, and two sacks, while being issued five penalties in 523 total snaps (349 pass blocking snaps, 174 run blocking snaps), per Pro Football Focus.

In his second year, the Buccaneers played Goedeke at right tackle exclusively, and it panned out well for him and the team. After a sophomore year with 12 penalties, his third year was much cleaner. Goedeke played 905 snaps, allowing 17 total pressures, three sacks, and zero quarterback hits.

With Goedeke improving year after year, general manager Jason Licht ensured that he wouldn't play right tackle for any other team. This is great news for the Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield, especially with the huge expectations the team has for the foreseeable future.
