Patriots QB Drake Maye addresses Jabrill Peppers’ surprise release

The Patriots had a lot of roster turnover this offseason that included a lot of surprise cuts including veteran safety Jabrill Peppers.

For Drake Maye, he knows it comes with the business side of the NFL.

“It’s unfortunate,” the Patriots quarterback said during his weekly appearance on “WEEI Afternoons.” “Somebody you get to know well, a veteran in this league that I respected. But at the end of the day what we’re trying to establish around here is putting trust in the coaching staff, putting trust and respect in what they do.

“There’s two sides to it. You care about the person and the relationship you had with Pep,” he continued. “But also, you care about the team and know they’re trying to do what’s best for this football team this year.”

Peppers’ release came as a shock. He originally made the 53-man roster after playing deep into the final preseason game. Coach Mike Vrabel said the Patriots are just trying to do the right thing and what was in the best interest of the team.

The narrative being that Peppers wasn’t a good fit in the scheme Terrell Williams and Vrabel are building was denied by the head coach.

“We’re just trying to build toward Sunday,” Vrabel said. “And that’s our focus. It’s a decision we had to make, and again, I wish the best for Jabrill.”
