Green Bay Packers: former wide receiver signs with 49ers active roster after starting on…

The Green Bay Packers have a very exciting group of young wide receivers on their roster as they enter the 2025 NFL season. Over the course of the past several seasons, general manager Brian Gutekunst has been hard at work rebuilding the room through the NFL Draft. Gone are veterans like Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, and Marquez Valdes Scantling, and present are young studs like Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, and Jayden Reed.

Additionally, Green Bay also used two of their first picks in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Once again, the Packers will enter the season without a bonified number one wide receiver, but have hopes that one of their young pass catchers will emerge as the leader of the room.

Meanwhile, most of the other wide receivers they have let go are now on teams other than the ones they left Green Bay to play with.

Of all the former Packers wide receivers still playing the NFL, Valdes-Scantling (MVS) should probably be considered to be the one who has experienced the most success. While he has not put up the numbers or received the accolades of Adams, he did win two Super Bowls while playing for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Over the last year or so, though, MVS has been bouncing around the NFL, struggling to find a permanent home. After being released by Kansas City following the 2023 season, he played last year for the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints, playing in 14 games and catching 19 passes for 411 yards and four touchdowns.

After electing free agency at the start of the 2025 offseason, MVS was courted by multiple teams, notably the Pittsburgh Steelers (and Aaron Rodgers), the Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers. He elected to sign with Seattle, and spent training camp and the preseason with them.

However, he did not make their 53-man roster and was released. Subsequently, he signed with San Francisco’s practice squad (again choosing not to re-united with Rodgers).

On Monday, though, the 49ers announced that they were signing him to their 53-man roster:

San Francisco could use a deep speed threat like MVS, who may not collect many targets and receptions, but forces defenses to dedicate defenders to him because of how fast he can get down the field.

It remains to be seen how long he will stick with the 49ers. After all, he has bounced around quite a bit in the last 12 months. That being said, the fact that so many teams were interested in him is a clear indication that he still holds value around the NFL.
