Red Sox’s Alex Cora Provides Injury Update On Roman Anthony

The Boston Red Sox were dealt quite a scare on Tuesday.

No, we aren’t talking about Garrett Crochet giving up seven runs on a total of nine hits and four home runs before the offense rallied to secure a series victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

Roman Anthony left the game early with an injury, which was later revealed to be left oblique tightness.

Anthony aggravated his side during a check swing in the fourth inning, before making his uncomfortability rather obvious after striking out on a curveball by Guardians pitcher Slade Cecconi. Anthony immediately retreated to the tunnel and did not return, being replaced by Nate Eaton.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided an update following the game.

“He will have an MRI (on Wednesday), so we’ll know more during the day,” Cora said, as seen on NESN. “He’s sore.”

Anthony, who is slashing .291/.397/.465 since being promoted on June 9, previously missed two games with back tightness — which probably shouldn’t be used as a barometer for oblique tightness, as the latter typically carries a significantly longer period of recovery.

Houston Astros infielder Carlos Correa missed roughly two weeks with oblique tightness in 2024.

“I’m not really sure,” Anthony said when asked what his concern level was regarding the injury, as seen on NESN. “… It’s definitely worse (than the back injury), but we’ll see after the MRI.”

The Red Sox will await the results of his imaging before figuring out the next steps.
