Arsenal in contract talks with key defender

Arsenal return to Champions League action on Tuesday evening when they host Atletico Madrid.

The Premier League leaders maintained their advantage at the top of the table with a 1-0 win over London rivals Fulham on Saturday, and Arteta will hope to see his side continue their impressive run of form at The Emirates on Tuesday.

So far this season the Gunners have won both of their matches in the Champions League group phase, and Arteta will want to see his side move a step closer to qualification by beating Atletico.

In the meantime, it has emerged that the North London outfit are in talks with one of their defenders over a new contract.

As per GiveMeSport, Arsenal are in discussions with defender Jurrien Timber about a new deal.

The Dutchman’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2027/28 season, but Arsenal have been in talks to try to agree an extension.

It is claimed that the club are now in direct talks with Timber in an effort to reach a breakthrough, with the player himself also keen to stay put in the capital.

Timber, 24, joined Arsenal from Dutch side Ajax in 2023 but suffered a horror injury during his Premier League debut for the club.

Since returning to full fitness, the versatile defender has established himself as a key player for Arteta’s side.

In total he has now made more than 60 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners, including ten so far this season.

The report claims that those in charge of the club have been impressed by the player both on and off the pitch.

The Netherlands international, who can play at right-back or as a central defender, is therefore set to be rewarded with a new contract that will see him given a pay rise.
