Max Dowman brace not enough as Arsenal U19s lose seven-goal thriller to Atletico

Teenage sensation Max Dowman scored twice for Arsenal U19s in their 4-3 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Youth League at Mangata Developments Stadium, Meadow Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Dowman had not featured for Arsenal in the UEFA Youth League this season before today’s fixture. However, he was an unused substitute in the first team’s Champions League wins over Athletic Club and Olympiacos.

Arsenal got off to a flying start, opening the scoring inside four minutes as Harrison Dudziak slotted the ball home, after receiving a pass from Brando Bailey-Joseph.

The young Gunners nearly doubled their advantage in the 10th minute, when Bailey-Joseph picked out Osman Kamara, whose effort was blocked on the goal line.

Atleti drew level in the 18th minute through Sergio Vinatea’s long-range strike.

Just before the half hour mark, Dowman scored his first goal of the game from the penalty spot, restoring Arsenal’s lead.

Atleti could not level the scores before halftime, allowing Arsenal to head into the break with a one-goal cushion.

The Spanish side eventually levelled the scoring before the hour mark, when Sergio Esteban beat Porter from the penalty spot.

Moments later, Atleti went ahead for the first time in the game when Ruben Gomez did well in beating his marker before firing a shot past Porter.

Ten minutes from time, Arsenal were awarded a penalty, which Dowman converted.

However, the 15-year-old’s heroics were undone by Jesus Barrios, who steered the ball home at the back post to hand Atleti all three points.

The result sees Arsenal drop to 30th in the Youth League standings, eight places adrift of a qualification spot for the knock-out stage.
