Mikel Arteta has been speaking after Arsenal’s Champions League win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
Gabriel Martinelli got the next and Viktor Gyokeres got in on the action to make it three goals in 10 minutes, and the striker’s second goal made it four goals in 13 minutes. The result puts Arsenal third in the Champions League league phase standings, behind Inter Milan by one goal and PSG by two goals. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid could realistically surpass them on goal difference on Wednesday.
Arsenal boss Arteta won’t be worried about that at this early stage, with five games still remaining, and especially not with his team on three wins from three games in the competition. "It was a tough match. After the goal they opened up a bit and it was a little easier for us to find the spaces. Very happy with the result,” he told Prime Video after the game.
"At this level in the Champions League you really need to step up and we certainly did that in every phase of the play. Very happy."
Asked about Gyokeres’ brace after a tricky start in front of goal for the striker since his Arsenal arrival, Arteta responded: “Delighted as he fully deserved it. The work rate he brings to the team is outstanding. We value a lot of things that he does for the team and it was the biggest smile on his face today and look at his team-mates. Hopefully this is the start of some beautiful sequences."
Another moment of quality from Arsenal came from Declan Rice, who delivered a pin-point delivery to assist Gabriel’s opener, helping to carve open a tight game. "It was superb,” Arteta said of the delivery. “We could have scored in the first half but to have that ability to score those types of goals and different players are scoring. We want to continue and improve."
Arteta added on the win and the impact on the fans: “It creates a better cohesion between ourselves and supporters, belief is huge in sport. Let's focus on Sunday now."
