FPL Gameweek 9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold & Sell

After an entertaining GW8 that saw Liverpool’s woes continue, Arsenal maintain their top spot, Chelsea with yet another red card (but a win this time), and a 6-goal thriller between Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, we take a look at GW9 and the best transfer tips managers can consider before the deadline.

In this blog, we will analyse the best players to buy, those you should retain, and the ones who need to be sold ahead of GW9.

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

Nick Woltemade (£7.4m) – FWD, Newcastle – 17.4% TSB

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY- Woltemade

Woltemade has been consistently scoring for Newcastle since his 69 million-pound move on deadline day this summer. The German forward has scored 4 goals in 5 starts for the Magpies so far and has found himself on the scoresheet consecutively in their last 3 games.

Most FPL Points among Forwards since Woltemade debut:

Haaland- 59

Woltemade- 32

Mateta- 29

Welbeck- 28

Thiago- 26

He has outperformed his xGI of 2.8 and is the 3rd-highest goalscorer among forwards (tied with Brighton’s Danny Welbeck). However, he is the most transferred-in player this Gameweek, so managers are quickly recognizing his high point-scoring potential.

Among forwards, Woltemade has seen the highest price rise so far this season, behind Haaland, with an increase of £0.4m. So make sure you get him in as soon as possible before his price and TSB increase any further.

Newcastle have a great run of fixtures between GW9 and GW11 as well, with Fulham, West Ham, and Brentford coming up.

Bukayo Saka (£10.0m) – MID, Arsenal – 14.3% TSB

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY- Saka

Saka has had some injury issues this season, enduring his second hamstring injury of the year and missing a couple of league games for the Gunners. He scored 1 goal in 2 starts in Arsenal’s first 2 fixtures of the season before being sidelined due to his hamstring injury.

Saka then returned with a 45-minute appearance against Man City in GW5 before returning to the starting lineup against Newcastle in GW6. Saka scored a penalty against West Ham in GW7, registering a xGI of 1.95, and earning 8 points in the process.

While he had no goal involvements against Fulham last weekend, he still managed to earn 7 points through a clean sheet, bonus points, and DEFCON points as well, demonstrating his well-rounded game. The Englishman took several corners as well at Craven Cottage and had a shot on target, so he was still quite involved in attack even if he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet.

The Gunners have a good run of fixtures as well, against Palace, Burnley, Sunderland, and Tottenham, so Saka is expected to rack up some points in the near future.

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD

Joao Pedro (£7.5m) – FWD, Chelsea – 58.7% TSB

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD- Joao Pedro

Although he has the 3rd highest TSB of any player this season, Joao Pedro has seen a decline in his TSB compared to the start of the season. He is the most transferred out forward (2nd behind Salah among all players) this gameweek, and for good reason.

Pedro has blanked in his last 4 games for Chelsea, scoring just 2 points every game, and his stats during that period show that he’s been rather lackluster in attack recently.

Joao Pedro’s stats b/w GW5 & GW8:

Shots – 2

Shots on Target – 0

Big Chances – 0

xG – 0.07

Big Chances Created – 1

However, it is important to note that Chelsea have been on a reckless streak of red cards, and of their last 4 games, 2 were defeats to Man United and Brighton, which saw them reduced to ten men. Chelsea then faced Liverpool in GW7, a difficult fixture they managed to win with a stoppage-time goal.

While he hasn’t produced returns of late, it is recommended to hold on to Joao Pedro and give him another chance, especially with his upcoming fixtures – SUN(H), TOT(A), WOL(H), BUR(A) – which offer the perfect opportunities to score and return to form.

Another thing to be noted is that Joao Pedro is suspended for the midweek UCL fixture vs Ajax which in turn will work out good for his minutes in GW9 vs SUN(H).

Mohammed Kudus (£6.8m) – MID, Spurs – 35.3% TSB

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to HOLD- Kudus

Kudus is among the highest-scoring midfielders this season, having earned 41 points so far. The midfielder seems to earn most of his points from creation, with 1 goal and 5 assists to his name.

While he hasn’t offered returns on a more consistent basis, he has provided a high-point tally in Gameweeks where he has scored or assisted (see below). Although the DEFCON system has given managers a different way to look at team selection and how points can be scored, the name of the game remains goals and assists for FPL, being the highest point source in any given Gameweek.

So it would be recommended to keep Kudus in your team and bet on him to give you major points in certain gameweeks.

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL

Mohamed Salah (£14.4m) – MID, Liverpool – 32.7% TSB

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL- Salah

Salah has probably been the most shocking player this season after a subpar start to the campaign by his standards. While he has scored 36 points so far, averaging 4.5 points a game, this is a far cry from the Salah we as FPL managers have come to know.

To put things in context, Salah had more than double his current FPL point tally at this point last season, having scored 74 points by GW8 last term. He started as the most expensive player this season at £14.5m, but his price has dropped by 0.1m.

Salah is the most transferred-out player this gameweek and the second-highest in that regard behind injured Cole Palmer in the entire season so far.

He has blanked in his last 3 games for Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side have endured a recent slump in form as well, losing their last 4 games across competitions.

And at Salah’s ultra-premium price, it doesn’t make sense to park such a large portion of your funds in this asset. His FPL rival Haaland has been having an unbelievable season, and it would make more sense to keep the Man City forward as your sole ultra-premium asset.

Tijjani Reijnders (£5.7m) – MID, Manchester City – 31.0% TSB

FPL GW9 Transfer Tips: Two Players to SELL- Reijnders

Reijnders initially seemed to offer great value for money at just 5.7m, a sub-6m midfielder who is a key player at Man City and a mainstay in Pep Guardiola’s midfield. However, the midfielder has struggled to get good returns for managers of late.

He has scored only a goal and 2 assists in 8 games so far, with his last goal involvement coming in GW5 against Arsenal. Reijnders is by no means a DEFCON midfielder either, having scored DEFCON points in just 1 game this season. Apart from a 10-point haul in the opening gameweek and a 9-point haul against Arsenal in GW5, Reijnders has not scored more than 3 points in his other fixtures.

Man City have a tough run of fixtures coming up as well, with 3 of their next 4 fixtures registering an FDR of 4 (see below).

So, it might be time to transfer Reijnders out and look at other midfielders like Caicedo, Jaidon Anthony, and Xhaka, etc, who have been consistently scoring points either through DEFCON, G/A, or both.
