Gabriel Magalhaes has earned glowing praise after his commanding performance in Arsenal’s dominant 4-0 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, with former Premier League star Nigel Reo-Coker describing him as “one of the best centre-backs in the world.”

The Brazilian defender was instrumental in the victory at the Emirates Stadium, breaking the deadlock with a powerful header before setting up Arsenal’s fourth goal. His contributions at both ends of the pitch showcased why he’s become one of Mikel Arteta’s most reliable performers this season.

While his attacking impact has become a valuable weapon, having scored seven goals since the start of last season, Gabriel’s defensive work remains the foundation of his success. The 27-year-old has helped Arsenal keep four consecutive clean sheets, with the Gunners conceding only three times in 12 matches across all competitions.

Signed from Lille for just £27 million in 2020, Gabriel has developed into a cornerstone of Arsenal’s back line and a symbol of their resurgence under Arteta. His partnership with William Saliba has been central to a defence that many now consider among the best in Europe.

Former West Ham and Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker believes Gabriel’s form deserves global recognition. Speaking on CBS Sports after Arsenal’s victory, he said: “For me, Arsenal have taken it to another level this season. They look really hard to beat, they’re well organised, there’s real strength in depth now so there’s no excuses anymore, they have everything they need.

“They have the weapons to win top trophies, it’s in their hands. They’ve even taken the defence to a new level and they’re just so hard to beat. We need to have a conversation about Gabriel and ask if he is now one of the best centre-backs in the world? I think so.

“Look at the role he plays in the final third. What I love about him is he’s got so much desire to get to the ball, whether that be at the back or when he goes up.

“The two centre-backs pride themselves on keeping clean sheets and are willing to defend all day long. Arsenal might have the best defence in European football as of right now.”

Gabriel has now made 222 appearances for Arsenal, forming one of Europe’s most formidable defensive duos with Saliba. As the Gunners sit three points clear at the top of the Premier League table, their defensive resilience continues to fuel belief that this could finally be the season Arteta delivers silverware.

Arsenal will look to extend their fine run of form when they face Crystal Palace in a London derby this weekend.
