Former midfielder turned pundit Nigel Reo-Coker has said that Arsenal star Gabriel Magalhaes is ‘one of the best’ centre-backs in the world.

Since moving to the Emirates Stadium from LOSC Lille back in 2020, the Brazilian has established himself as an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up.

However, he initially struggled to showcase consistency in the Premier League, making several high-profile errors. But he has been displaying his best form since being deployed alongside William Saliba.

Gabriel isn’t just a defender; he also has the tendency to chip in with important goals, scoring twice and registering as many assists in 12 appearances across all competitions this season. Moreover, he has helped his side keep eight clean sheets.

After proving his worth in the Premier League, the 27-year-old has secured his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil national team’s starting line-up.

Now, on CBS Sports (via Metro), Reo-Coker heaps praise on the South American and says that he is currently ‘one of the best’ centre-backs in the world.

The pundit said:

“We need to have a conversation about Gabriel and ask if he is now one of the best centre-backs in the world? I think so. Look at the role he plays in the final third. What I love about him is he’s got so much desire to get to the ball, whether that be at the back or when he goes up.

“The two centre-backs pride themselves on keeping clean sheets and are willing to defend all day long. Arsenal might have the best defence in European football as of right now.”

Pundit heaps praise on Gabriel

Thanks to Gabriel and the team’s excellent performances, Arsenal have enjoyed a stellar start to this season. They are currently at the top of the Premier League table with 19 points from eight games, sitting three points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

On the other hand, Arsenal have also been outstanding in the Champions League, winning all three games without conceding any goals. Arteta’s side are currently the favourite to become the English champions this season, and if they eventually manage to achieve that, they will win the title after more than two decades.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will welcome in-form Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League this weekend before facing off against Brighton in the EFL Cup next week.
