Mikel Merino sends 'proud' Arsenal statement after achieving landmark moment under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal star Mikel Merino helped captain the side for the first time in their win over Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

The midfielder has perhaps been an underrated part of the squad ever since he made the move from Real Sociedad last summer.

While the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi will take the plaudits, the role played by Mikel Merino at Arsenal has been key too.

Whether it’s on the left of midfield or as a makeshift striker, the Spaniard has come up with some key moments so far.

Merino’s presence on the pitch has been important, and that was rewarded with a first chance to captain the side in Arsenal’s win over Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Mikel Merino proud to be named Arsenal captain against Brighton

With Mikel Arteta opting for a much-changed Arsenal side to take on Brighton in midweek, he leaned on Mikel Merino to be the captain.

The midfielder impressed, helping to unpick the opposition defence with an outrageous backheel, which allowed Myles Lewis-Skelly to set up Ethan Nwaneri for the opener.

For Merino, the opportunity to lead Arsenal out was a moment he was extremely proud of, as he posted a statement on social media.

He said: “PROUD and HONOURED! To have the chance to represent this club and group of players as a captain tonight was unbelievable.

“Thank you everyone for the messages and support. Not a better way to do it than with the win and the ticket to the next round. COYG”

It was a moment that not only showcased the quality of Merino, but also the depth of leadership options that Arsenal have.

This was a side that didn’t have the likes of Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bukayo Saka or Declan Rice from the very start.

But, nonetheless, they found a way to get past Brighton and into the next round.

How Arsenal players reacted to Mikel Merino’s captaincy

There were plenty of fans left impressed by Merino in his first outing as Arsenal captain, as he guided the team to victory.

His teammates seemed equally amazed by his performance, as they took to the comments of his statement on Instagram.

It remains to be seen when Merino could get the opportunity to captain Arsenal again, but for now, he has one win with the armband in his possession.
