Burnley vs Arsenal preview: The Clarets looking to upset league leaders

Burnley hosts league leaders Arsenal at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon, as the Gunners will be looking to extend their lead in the Premier League standings.

Burnley were successful last time out, as they defeated struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 to go five points clear of the relegation zone.

Eberechi Eze’s strike against his former employers Crystal Palace was the difference as Arsenal won 1-0 in their last Premier League game.

They were also in midweek action as they dispatched Brighton 2-0 to progress to the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup.

**Match preview**

Burnley have never scored more than once in any of their 18 Premier League games against Arsenal (9 goals in total), the most any side has faced another without scoring twice in a match.

The visitors can now win four top-flight games in a row without conceding for the first time since Arteta’s playing days in 2014, and the Burnley faithful will not be best pleased to learn that Arsenal have won each of their last 13 Premier League matches against newly promoted teams.

The Clarets’ last top-flight win against a team on top of the table was in October 1975, when they beat Queens Park Rangers.

The Gunners have been bested just once in their last 24 Premier League matches against teams to have competed in the Championship the previous season – that solitary loss came against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in May 2023.

The only team to prevent Burnley from registering at Turf Moor this season so far was reigning champions Liverpool, but the Clarets must match a 50-year feat if they are to defy the rankings this weekend – they have not claimed a top-flight win against the team starting the day in first place since 1975.

All four goals Arsenal have scored on the road this season have been from corners (Calafiori v Man Utd, Merino & Gabriel v Newcastle and Trossard v Fulham).

Burnley have picked up seven points from their four home league games this season, as many as in their final 11 home Premier League games in 2023/24.

The Gunners have been victorious in 23 of their last 24 league games against promoted sides, including the last 13 in a row.

Quilindschy Hartman has four assists in his last four Premier League appearances, though all have come away from home.

**Team news**

**Burnley**

Lesley Ugochukwu was a late enforced change in the five-goal thriller with Wolves, but there are no serious concerns about the midfielder’s availability for Saturday.

Jordan Beyer, Zeki Amdouni and Connor Roberts are all sidelined due to injuries.

**Arsenal**

Declan Rice and Calafiori shook off their injury concerns and are available for selection, while Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba are unavailable for the visitors.

Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke, and Martin Odegaard are long-time absentees, and they all miss out.

**Predicted line-ups**

**Burnley**: Dubravka, Walker, Tuanzebe, Esteve, Hartman, Florentino, Cullen, Bruun Larsen, Ugochukwu, Anthony, Flemming.

**Arsenal**: Raya, Timber, Mosquera, Gabriel, Calafiori, Eze, Zubimendi, Rice, Saka, Trossard, Gyokeres.
