Burnley 0-2 Arsenal Stats: Gyökeres and Rice Head Gunners to Another Three Points

For the third time this season, Arsenal did not face a shot on target in a Premier League game. Check out the best facts and Opta data from the game in our Burnley vs Arsenal stats page.

Arsenal strengthened their hold on top spot in the Premier League after a routine 2-0 win at Burnley on Saturday.

Goals from Viktor Gyökeres and Declan Rice in the first half were enough against a tame Burnley side who didn’t have a shot until the 71st minute at Turf Moor.

The win gives the Gunners a seven-point lead at the top of the table, with the chasing pack of Bournemouth, Tottenham, Sunderland and Manchester City still to play on Matchday 10.

Arsenal have now won 24 of their last 25 Premier League games against promoted sides, including the last 14 in a row.

The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute, and it will not have been a shock to anyone that it came from a corner. Rice whipped his cross to the far post, Gabriel Magalhães did well to volley it back into the middle and Gyökeres nodded in from close range.

It was the Gunners’ eighth goal from a corner in the league this season, the most ever by a team in their first 10 games of a Premier League campaign.

It probably should have been two when an error at the back from Maxime Estève allowed Bukayo Saka to run onto Gyökeres’ through ball, but Martin Dúbravka saved well from the England international.

Saka was denied by Dúbravka again after a flowing move, while Leandro Trossard – making his 100th appearance in the Premier League for Arsenal – saw his rebound cleared off the line.

The Belgian did play a part when the second goal arrived in the 35th minute, though, with his left-footed cross finding the unmarked Rice for a simple header against a Burnley backline showing none of the defensive capability that saw them concede just 16 goals in the Championship last season.

The game looked well over by half-time, with Burnley not attempting a single shot in the first half.

That sense of inevitability led to a quiet second half, with neither side having a shot until the 56th minute when Trossard tested Dúbravka from distance.

Mikel Merino replaced Gyökeres at half-time as Mikel Arteta took the chance to rest his first-choice striker ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Slavia Prague.

Burnley finally had a shot in the 71st minute when Zian Flemming tamely headed towards goal, but the hosts really should have halved the deficit when Estève headed a long diagonal ball across goal, but Florentino could only nod his effort over the bar.

That was the only threat against Arsenal, though, as for the third time this season, they went an entire Premier League game without facing a shot on target, with three more points to take back to north London.
