Mikel Arteta's great decision as Arsenal beat Burnley but Viktor Gyokeres fear

Arsenal comfortably beat Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor in another impressive outing for Mikel Arteta's men but it came with a major fear.

Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring after just 14 minutes following yet another set piece situation capitalised upon by the North London giants. Declan Rice swung the ball to the back post and Gabriel knocked it back across goal to Gyokeres who headed in from short distance.

A 12th set piece goal in 17 Premier League games for the Gunners was followed by a fine team move for the second strike of the game. In the 35th minute, Gyokeres collected a loose ball before drilling it cross field to Trossard with a fine pass from the Swedish striker.

The Belgium international crossed well and Rice arrived late before heading the ball into the corner of the net, to round off a stunning counter attack. It was another telling contribution from Trossard, who Arteta decided to keep at the club in the summer, despite rumours he was on his way out at the Emirates.

Trossard, who instead signed a new contract, of the same length until 2027, with a pay rise, has since claimed "leaving was never really an option - I feel very good at Arsenal". Whatever the truth of that situation, Arteta showing faith in the winger has proved to be a shrewd move, as this assist was his sixth goal contribution of the season so far in league and cup.

The visitors exited the field at the interval with a concern however, as Gyokeres had caught a stray elbow from Clarets midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu in an aerial duel shortly beforehand.

And he didn't emerge for the second half, with Arteta choosing to replace him with Spanish midfielder and makeshift forward Mikel Merino.

Scott Parker's side were unable to muster a shot until the second half, as Arsenal looked equally accomplished in both attacking and defending. The league leaders were comfortable but failed to add to their goal tally.

There may be more concerns for Arteta after Gyokeres was joined by Martin Zubimendi in being substituted. The Spaniard was down before being replaced by Christian Norgaard in the 77th minute, returning to the dugout with a shake of the head.

While Burnley hit the post from a free-kick with the last kick of the game, yet again, Arsenal's defensive strength was plain for all to see, with another clean sheet.

October’s form means Arsenal are now within touching distance of their all-time best streak of clean sheets, which is eight in a row recorded back in 1903 across two Second Division campaigns.

Another shutout against Sparta Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday would see Arsenal draw level with that team’s achievements.

And the club now have nine wins in a row in all competitions.
