Will Viktor Gyokeres Play This Week? - Mikel Arteta Provides "A Shame" Injury Update

Mikel Arteta has provided an injury update on striker Viktor Gyokeres, who had to be taken off against Burnley.

The Gunners won 2-0 over the weekend, in what was a dominant performance against a resolute Burnley side at Turf Moor. Arsenal took the lead in the 14th minute with a header after a perfectly delivered corner ball from Declan Rice.

Viktor Gyokeres nodded the ball in, which was his first Premier League goals in five games, taking his tally for the season up to four in the league and six in all competitions. It was one of Gyokeres’ better games since joining from Sporting CP in the summer, however, he had to be subbed off after the first half because of picking up a muscle injury.

Due to his injury, Gyokeres is now a doubt for Arsenal’s next game against Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Arteta provided an injury update on Gyokeres after the Burnley win.

Will Gyokeres play on Tuesday in the Champions League?

After Arsenal’s 2-0 win on Saturday, Mikel Arteta spoke to the media about Gyokeres’ injury, and hinted that he could miss the game against Prague on Tuesday. He was quoted in the Standard: “It’s a shame that he felt something. We had to take him off because he was feeling a little niggle. So we’ll have to wait and see. He felt something muscular so we have to wait to learn the extent of that.”

Arteta also expressed his disappointment at Gyokeres’ injury, as he hailed the Swedish striker’s performance against Burnley. “I think that was one of the best games he (Gyokeres) has played. I think overall his performance was exceptional.

“Everything – his high press, his position and his touches. His running in behind, the way he linked play, the way he got us from this situation to transition moments, a lot. I think he was in a really good moment.”

Based on the fact that Arsenal will be heavy favourites against Slavia Prague, Arteta may decide to be cautious and rest him ahead of the Gunners’ next Premier League game against Sunderland next weekend.
