Kyle Walker was right about Gareth Bale
Speaking to the Premier League’s official YouTube channel, Kyle Walker said he just knew Bale was destined to achieve great things away from North London.
He said: “I was very fortunate to play alongside him for a number of years, but that last season before he went to Real Madrid. I’d never seen anything like it really.
“Anything he hit went in and he basically carried the team with important goals at important times when we needed him. I think what he has gone on to achieve, you could see it coming and it’s fully deserved.”
Madrid signed Bale in September 2013 for £85.3m, breaking the world transfer record at the time, which had previously been held by Cristiano Ronaldo.
He was earning an initial £300,000-a-week in his first contract with Los Blancos and was part of some huge moments while on the books of the Spanish outfit.
Bale won a staggering 16 trophies with Real Madrid, while his overhead kick in the 2017/18 Champions League final versus Liverpool remains one of the best goals ever scored in the showpiece.
Gareth Bale could have joined Arsenal
While much of his success came away from the English capital, Bale remains one of Spurs’ best players.
However, had things gone differently, the now 36-year-old could well have joined Arsenal instead.
Shortly after signing Walcott from Southampton, Arsene Wenger could have signed Bale from the Saints in 2006.
The Frenchman has since admitted that not doing so was a ‘huge mistake’.
He said: “We didn’t take him [Bale] because we had Ashley Cole and (Gael) Clichy. We didn’t want another left back.
“I must honestly confess it was a huge mistake.
“He struggled at the start at Tottenham. They were ready to sell him on the noises I got. Then they moved him to midfield and he did exceptionally well. The career of a player sometimes depends on playing him in the right position.”
