Manchester City picked up a head-turning 3-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday with one player in particular catching the eye.
Arsenal dropped points in the banana skin visit to the Stadium of Light when taking on Sunderland at the weekend, allowing Premier League rivals to close the gap at the top of the table.
A ruthless Manchester City side did not pass up that opportunity when taking on Champions Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, beating Arne Slot’s men 3-0 in convincing fashion. That lifted the Cityzens to second in the table, now just four points behind the Gunners and level on games played.
Arsenal remain the favourites to finally lift the Premier League trophy under Mikel Arteta this season after a strong start to the campaign but Manchester City continue to look ever more a threat in the title race.
Manchester City ‘know how to go course and distance’ in Premier League
Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday, former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood admitted that Manchester City could never be written off. He said: “They are prolific winners of the Premier League, they know how to go course and distance - and have one of the best managers we’ve ever seen in the Premier League.
“Arsenal will be worried about Liverpool still, if Liverpool keep dropping points they’ll be less worried. Four points is nothing and it’s a team [Man City] who have done it before and are playing fantastically well. Yesterday was a statement win for them. They’ve integrated players into the team and look very comfortable, doing it without Rodri as well.
“It looks like they are finding a way. They were playing very well yesterday.”
Arsenal twice linked with Jeremy Doku transfer prior to Man City move
Sherwood was then asked about the form of Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku, who sparkled against Liverpool and continues to pose even the top sides real problems. The former Premier League boss suggested that the forward, who has three goals and four assists so far this season, could be the difference-maker this term.
Should Doku continue to boost a Manchester City title charge, that would be painful news for Arsenal. The Gunners were credited with interest in Doku when the player was just 17 years old in 2019 by The Sun and news of that interest returned in 2022 via CaughtOffside.
It was, however, Manchester City who won the transfer race. The club paid £55.5 million to sign the player from Rennes in 2023.
Sherwood said: “I think he’s a lot more consistent than he used to be. He certainly has an end product. He gets you on the edge of your seat and is now fulfilling that expectation with that sort of finish.
“He’s a wonderful player. I’d hate to mark him. He stands still and moves, gets up to a certain speed, drops his shoulder and moves so quickly. It’s impossible, he’ll flat foot any defender. He goes the outside, inside, getting his head up at the right time and playing off strikers as well.”
