"He started the season again a little bit shaky" - John Obi-Mikel asks Chelsea to replace 'improving' star with 'top' replacement

Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has urged the Blues to replace Robert Sanchez with a world-class goalkeeper. The Spaniard has divided opinion among fans since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023.

Sanchez made a number of mistakes last season, prompting the London giants to consider a move for AC Milan's Mike Maignan this summer. However, the move never materialized, and Chelsea ended the transfer window without reinforcing the position.

The 27-year-old has been in decent form this campaign, registering seven clean sheets in 14 games across competitions, earning praise from Obi Mikel.

However, speaking on his YouTube channel, the former Nigeria international insisted that his former side still need an upgrade in the position.

"There’s a little bit of improvement in his game, which we can all see. When he’s doing well, we also have to give a bit of credit. Yes, Sanchez is doing a little bit better compared to what he’s done last season, a little few mistakes," said Obi Mikel.

He continued:

"He started the season again a little bit shaky, but now he’s a little bit more consistent in terms of his performances. But I still think that we do need a top, top goalkeeper."

Chelsea are currently third in the Premier League table after 11 games, six points behind leaders Arsenal.

John Obi Mikel believes that Chelsea are not yet ready to win the Premier League. The London giants have won six of their 11 games in the league so far, losing three others.

They have scored 21 goals in the Premier League and have conceded 11 so far. Enzo Maresca's side secured a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers over the weekend, with Malo Gusto, Joao Pedro, and Pedro Neto all getting on the scoresheet.

However, Obi Mikel pointed out that the lack of experience in the Blues' squad could hurt their title chances this season.

"I think we’re not going to win the league this season. ‘I think we just lack a bit more experience in terms of winning the league, but I think top four should be our aim this season, Chelsea," said Obi Mikel.

Obi Mikel won the Premier League twice during his time at Stamford Bridge. The Blues last lifted the league title in the 2016/17 season when Antonio Conte was in charge.
