Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has opened up on the qualities that remind him of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal when watching Arsenal youngster Max Dowman play.
Speaking to ESPN, the Spaniard shared his thoughts on the talented 15-year-old, who has taken huge strides in his early football journey.
Dowman made his senior debut this season and has already impressed with his dribbling, creativity, and composure.
Despite his young age, the midfielder plays with remarkable confidence and flair. His ability to glide past defenders and create chances has stood out, earning him praise from teammates and fans alike.
Dowman also made history when he came off the bench for Arsenal against Slavia Prague. He became the youngest player ever to appear in the Champions League, replacing Leandro Trossard with 17 minutes left in the 3–0 victory.
Raya highlights Dowman’s maturity and joy
Raya, who has trained with Dowman for some time, spoke glowingly about his attitude and natural enjoyment of the game.
However, he made it clear that both Dowman and Yamal are unique in their own ways.
Raya said: “I would not ever compare two players, even less two players with that quality. They are two very different players.
“But where they are similar is that when they go out onto the pitch, they enjoy it. They are always playing with a smile that it seems that they are playing in the school.
“They go out there to play, to have a good time. It is clear that they compete to help the team, but that naturalness in the way they play football, and at the level they’re playing, is incredible.”
The goalkeeper further added that Dowman’s calmness and confidence make him stand out among his peers.
The Spaniard added: “He’s 15, he’s turning 16 at the end of the year. He’s incredible.
“Obviously, we don’t share that much in the dressing room because he’s not allowed with the rules and everything.
But sharing the pitch is the maturity that he shows on the pitch, the willingness that he has just to enjoy and to be himself, to take on players, and always with a smile on his face is incredible.”
Raya impressed by youngster’s steady development
Raya further said that he has been impressed by Dowman’s development over time.
He concluded: “We’ve been training with him since he was 14 years old, so we’re very impressed with him and his quality, his qualities as a player.”
Dowman’s steady rise has already convinced Arsenal to secure his long-term future. Reports suggest the club will offer him a new deal once he turns 17, a sign of their belief in his potential.
