Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard “often sulked” at Genk but now appears to be a completely different player.
That’s according to his former coach Peter Maes. He’s been speaking about the Arsenal man to Het Belang van Limburg, [relayed by Voetbal Primeur.](https://www.voetbalprimeur.be/nieuws/1711825/trossard-aanvoerder-bij-rode-duivels.html)
Trossard finds himself in the news this week as he could be Belgian captain in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne and Youri Tielemans. The latter is now permanent captain but unavailable to play, while De Bruyne is absent through injury.
That’s left manager Rudi Garcia with a decision to make about his captain during this international break. Trossard, as one of the more experience in the squad, is under consideration.
That’s a big change for the Arsenal forward, who Maes says used to sulk when he had him at Genk.
“At that time, I didn’t immediately see Leandro as a true captain. Because he’s primarily someone who focuses on his own game,” he said.
“At least when I was training him. He wasn’t a regular starter yet, and he often sulked in training. Perhaps he’s evolved since then, because he’s doing a very good job at Arsenal now.”
Of course, over six years have now passed since Trossard played for Genk. He’s since established himself as a big player at Brighton and now Arsenal.
Maes can certainly see the difference and thinks the man he is now could be ideal as Belgian captain.
“It’s true that Leandro is a strong personality,” he added.
“In that respect, he’s a candidate to be captain of the Red Devils, especially considering everyone who’s absent. He believes in himself deeply and can convey that belief to the rest of the team.”
