Brazil release Gabriel injury statement as Arsenal's worst fears realised

Arsenal defender Gabriel is a major doubt for the North London derby

Gabriel hobbled off during Brazil’s 2-0 win at the Emirates on Saturday and looked in obvious discomfort after the game.

The Brazilian FA then released a statement on Sunday saying he will not travel with the rest of the squad to France for a friendly against Tunisia on Tuesday.

The statement said: player Gabriel Magalhaes was re-evaluated this Sunday and underwent imaging tests that revealed a muscle injury in his right thigh.

“Therefore, the player will not travel with the team for the match against Tunisia in Lille. No other player will be called up to replace him.”

That has confirmed ’s worst fears ahead of next Sunday’s clash with at the Emirates. Gabriel has been a key player for Arsenal this season both in defence and attack and the Gunners will be anxious he does not face a long lay-off.

Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti offered an apology following the injury to the 27-year-old. : “Bad? I don’t know, he had a problem on his adductor the medical staff have to check tomorrow.

"We are really sorry for this, really disappointed, when players have an injury I hope they can recover well and soon.”

It comes on top of Riccardo Calafiori returning to Arsenal from the Italy squad but his injury is not thought to be serious. Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso said Calafiori could have potentially played their final World Cup qualifier, but out of fairness to his club, he was allowed to leave the camp early.

He said: “Calafiori left the training camp. We tried Calafiori, he had a few issues. I thank him for his commitment: he stayed here for a week, he could have played perhaps, but it wouldn’t have been fair to him or Arsenal."

The Gunners head into the derby with their north London rivals at the top of the , clear of by four points. But Mikel Arteta's side face a daunting run of fixtures, facing Spurs, and then in the space of seven days.
