Eddie Howe must solve Newcastle United's 'identity' crisis

Newcastle United latest news: Newcastle United players represented Italy, England, Brazil, Germany and Sweden during the international break.

Newcastle United’s international representatives have had mixed fortunes whilst away with their nations.

Newcastle United players have represented five countries during this international break as European qualifying for next summer’s World Cup comes to a close. Whilst England had already safely secured their qualification for that tournament, other countries faced some nervy games this week to see whether they would join them in the draw - one that will take place next month.

Elsewhere, Brazil had two friendly matches to play as they began their preparations for that tournament as a whole host of England U21’s players tried their best to impress and potentially secure themselves a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

Here, we take a look at how those Newcastle United players on international duty this week fared whilst away with their respective nations.

Newcastle United’s international representatives - round-up

Dan Burn (England)

Burn was an unused substitute at Wembley as England beat Serbia in their penultimate World Cup qualifying match. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Ebere Eze earned the Three Lions a 2-0 win.

Burn did play in England’s 2-0 win over Albania on Sunday, though, starting at centre-back alongside John Stones in the absence of March Guehi and Ezri Konsa. Two goals from Harry Kane ensured that the Three Lions would end their qualifying campaign with a 100% record, without conceding a single goal.

Albania 0-2 England - Sunday 16 November (5pm kick-off)

Sandro Tonali (Italy)

Tonali played 90 minutes as Italy defeated Moldova on Thursday night. That kept Italy’s faint hopes of qualifying automatically for next summer’s World Cup alive.

However, Tonali subsequently withdrew from international duty following that game due to injury. The midfielder was ‘not 100%’ according to Fabrizio Romano and wasn’t risked during their clash with Norway.

Italy 1-4 Norway - Sunday 16 November (7:45pm kick-off)

Bruno Guimaraes (Brazil)

Guimaraes played a key role for Brazil as they defeated Senegal 2-0 in a friendly match at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Guimaraes has become a key part of Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI since his appointment as manager earlier this year and will be desperate to impress and book his spot in the Italian’s World Cup squad next summer.

Brazil 2-0 Senegal - Saturday 15 November (4pm kick-off)

Brazil v Tunisia - Tuesday 18 November (7:30pm kick-off)

Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw (Germany)

Woltemade netted twice as Germany overcame Luxembourg on Friday night. The Magpies man, who netted his first senior international goal during last month’s international break, increased his tally to three for his country with a brace on Friday.

Woltemade will be relied on once again when Germany face Slovakia in a crunch qualifier on Monday night. Thiaw, meanwhile, was introduced as a 79th minute substitute by Julian Nagelsmann on Friday night for his first appearance for his nation in over two years.

Anthony Elanga and Emil Krafth (Sweden)

Graham Potter took charge of his first game as Sweden manager on Saturday, but couldn’t prevent his side slumping to a 4-1 defeat to Switzerland. Sweden have endured a miserable qualifying campaign to date and sit rock bottom of their group.

Anthony Elanga played 78 minutes before being replaced by Emil Forsberg. Krafth, meanwhile, was an unused substitute after being a late replacement for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall in Potter’s squad.

Alexander Isak, meanwhile, came onto the pitch in the 62nd minute but was unable to break his goalscoring duck.

Switzerland 4-1 Sweden - Saturday 15 November (7:45pm kick-off)

Sweden v Slovenia - Tuesday 18 November (7:45pm kick-off)

Lewis Hall and Lewis Miley (England U21’s)

Both Hall and Miley started England U21’s 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Friday night. Hall was fouled for a penalty during the first half of that match, one Divin Mubama converted after he had missed an earlier spot-kick.

Hall was withdrawn in the 70th minute by Lee Carsley, whilst Miley lasted six minutes longer before being taken off for Sheffield United’s Sydie Peck.
