The big Man Utd transfer decision Sir Alex Ferguson would never have allowed to happen

Scott McTominay would be a focal part of Manchester United if legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson was still at the helm.

That's the view of former Scotland international Colin Hendry, who believes he would still be running out at Old Trafford had things been different.

The Tartan Army fans' favourite — who showed his quality with an incredible bicycle-kick goal in Scotland's win over Denmark — has seen his stock take an almighty rise in the past 12 months.

After swapping the Premier League for Serie A, the midfielder instantly grabbed the hearts of the Napoli faithful and is now the King of Naples.

He's been immortalised in Italy with a shrine, while fans have also inked their skin with tattoos in his honour.

McTominay landed the league MVP award for his stunning debut campaign that ended with the Serie A title alongside Scotland pal Billy Gilmour.

Did Manchester United make a huge mistake in letting Scott McTominay leave?

A Ballon d'Or nomination followed with McTominay finishing 18th in the voting — ahead of the likes of England and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

All of this compared to the recent ups and downs at Man Utd has left Hendry scratching his head as to why they even let the 28-year-old leave in the first place.

Hendry, speaking on the Market Madness podcast, said: "I've found it difficult to understand why they moved him on.

"I'm going to say that I think if Sir Alex was still in charge, Sir Alex Ferguson, I don't think he would have been allowed to have left.

"He would probably have been a focal point of what Manchester United needs, and they've had their troubles. There's no two ways.

"And as many top-name players have come in, they've really not done it for Manchester United. And you're looking at a homegrown player, really, in Scott McTominay, and more or less somebody that has come up with key goals.

"He's come up for key goals for Manchester United, situations for Manchester United. He's come up with key goals and situations for Napoli. And, of course, he's come up with key goals and situations for Scotland.

"So I think that would be a small regret, albeit maybe a small one, but certainly a player that could have had an active, key part in the progression of Manchester United."

McTominay played another vital role on Tuesday night as Scotland book a ticket to the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998.

He netted a stunning overhead-kick past Denmark and Celtic No1 Kasper Schmeichel to get the ball rolling at Hampden.

Lawrence Shankland grabbed Scotland's second, but the hosts were pegged back twice, before Kieran Tierney sent the country wild with an added-time strike against the 10-man Danes.

Kenny McLean then put the icing on the cake with a halfway line effort to secure a 4-2 win and top spot in the qualification group.
