Manchester United are exploring a deal for Olympiacos midfielder Christos Mouzakitis, according to Greek outlet Sportal.
The Red Devils primarily focused on strengthening their forward department during last summer’s transfer window.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko were recruited to add more goals and creativity in the final third.
Alongside them, goalkeeper Senne Lammens has made a huge impression after his deadline day switch from Antwerp.
The focus could turn to the midfield department next year, and Mouzakitis has recently emerged as a potential target.
Sportal clarify that United have ‘real interest’ in landing the 18-year-old.
It was previously reported that he has a £26 million buy-out clause in his contract, but the outlet claim that option does not exist.
Instead, they cite that Olympiacos are aiming for £40m for a summer sale, and the valuation could even increase in future.
AC Milan, Villarreal, Leverkusen and Napoli are also interested in the player, but United seem the most keen on signing him.
The club have had a scout monitoring Mouzakitis on numerous occasions this season.
Mouzakitis appears to be a promising talent
The 18-year-old made 38 appearances during his breakthrough campaign at Olympiacos last term, scoring two goals and providing five assists.
The central midfielder has continued to impress this season. He has chipped in with two assists from 13 appearances for the reigning Greek champions.
Mouzakitis has yet to make a goal contribution in the Champions League, but he recently excelled against PSV Eindhoven in a 1-1 stalemate at home.
The teenager made eight recoveries, while winning six duels and three tackles.
Mouzakitis is obviously hugely talented, but we would be surprised if United make a huge outlay of £40m to prise him away from Olympiacos next summer.
He could leave for a lesser price to another club. Brighton & Hove Albion signed his teammate Charalampos Kostoulas for an initial £31m in June.
The Seagulls are also keen on Mouzakitis, and could emerge as a potential destination. United may prefer to spend on tried-and-tested midfielders in the Premier League.
United are focused on two big midfield signings. They are reportedly keen on bolstering the department with Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba next term.
