Elliot Anderson to Man United transfer update emerges as Scott McTominay return claim made

As the final international break of 2025 draws to a close, Manchester United are gearing up for a crucial run of fixtures heading into the winter period. It's been a relatively strong start to the campaign for Ruben Amorim's side - in comparison to last year's woes - and the Red Devils sit seventh in the standings.

United are just a point off the top four with 11 games played. They return to action on Monday night with the visit of Merseyside outfit Everton. The January transfer window is also right around the corner with rumours already ramping up regarding potential incomings.

United spent big on attacking reinforcements over the summer, but links to midfielders simply won't go away. Here, MEN Sport takes a look at some of the big headlines involving United...

Anderson to Man United transfer update

One name that has emerged as a potential target for United in recent weeks is Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. Since his move to the City Ground from Newcastle in the summer of 2024, the 23-year-old has established himself was one of the most promising midfielders in the Premier League and he also earned his senior England debut in September.

According to The Times, United are monitoring Anderson's progress at Forest ahead of a potential move for the player in the summer. The article also notes that his club are expected to demand a fee in the region of £100 million, owing to his rapid progress over the last 12 months.

It has been claimed that United are unlikely to bid for Anderson in January, likely because Forest will be unwilling to listen to offers for one of their most integral players midway through the campaign. But there will be a midfield void that needs filling in the summer with Casemiro likely to depart, and Anderson is the latest name tipped to join.

McTominay return claim

A surprise homecoming could be on the cards for Scott McTominay, if recent reports are anything to go by. The Scotland international is a product of United's academy and he made over 250 senior appearances for the club prior to his move to Napoli in 2024.

Since moving to Italy, the 28-year-old has enjoyed remarkable success, including winning a league title in his first season. However, it has been rumoured McTominay holds a strong desire to return to the Premier League and a number of clubs are said to be interested.

That's according to outlet TEAMtalk, who say Arsenal are exploring a shock move for the player, with Tottenham, Everton and even United also interested. However, the article does note that any move has to be to the right club and for the right project.

Semenyo race

Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo is quickly becoming one of the most talked about names ahead of the upcoming transfer window. The 25-year-old signed a new deal with the Cherries in the summer, but it has since emerged that the deal includes a £65 million release clause for January, which lowers to £50 million in the summer.

TalkSPORT are now also reporting that up to five Premier League clubs are keen on the Bournemouth star, and while he is happy at his current club, a move as early as January cannot be ruled out. The article adds that Semenyo would prefer to remain in England if he were to move, although there is interest from abroad including AC Milan.

Liverpool are one of the standout names linked with Semenyo, while Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have been linked in the past. It was rumoured that both of those clubs made an approach over the summer. Otherwise, Manchester City and Arsenal are also both alert to the player's situation, meaning five of the so-called 'big six' clubs could battle it out for his signature over the next two windows.
