Scotland punched their ticket to the 2026 World Cup for next summer after securing a sensational 4-2 win over 10-man Denmark in their Group C clash on Tuesday.

McTominay played a starring role for Scotland at Hampden Park, with the former Manchester United midfielder opening the scoring with a sensational overhead kick.

Which Man Utd player has most chance of playing for England at the World Cup?

Speaking on his podcast, Gary Lineker thinks that McTominay’s exit from Old Trafford is linked to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

“What a spell he’s having in his career,” he said on The Rest Is Football.

“You know, he goes from Manchester United, probably his club that he played for since a boy.

“And then he was probably, I mean, surely they must have seen the talent that he had?

“But I suspect he was sold because of the PSR rules and you get, you know, a bigger advantage because he’s a homegrown lad, which strikes me as absolutely wrong.”

Scott McTominay’s Man Utd exit to Napoli saw the Premier League club benefit from the PSR rules

Scott McTominay’s fate at United was all but sealed in 2024 after the Red Devils signed midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth £50.5m.

The 28-year-old Scottish midfielder was expected to see his minutes reduced further with Manuel Ugarte’s arrival, despite Erik ten Hag being an admirer of the player.

Should PSR be scrapped?

McTominay left Old Trafford and signed for Serie A outfit Napoli in a £25.7m transfer deal, having spent his entire playing career at United before his 2024 transfer.

The Napoli ace came through the United youth academy and McTominay’s sale was pure profit for the Red Devils under the Premier League’s existing PSR rules.

McTominay has since impressed under Antonio Conte at Napoli and the Scotland international lifted the Serie A title in his debut season with the Naples-based club.
