Man Utd aim to overhaul their midfield options next year in their rebuild under Ruben Amorim.

United aim to overhaul the midfield department next year, with at least two signings targeted. They currently only have four senior central midfield options on their books and are just one injury or suspension away from a possible crisis. Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey both trained with the first-team squad on Friday morning and one of them could be named on the bench to face Everton in the Premier League on Monday night.

It is unclear whether Martinez could be named on the bench after his recent return to full training, almost 10 months since he last played a match. However, even if he is named in the matchday squad against Everton, Amorim has no plans to utilise him in midfield, despite the fact he played there occasionally during his time with Ajax.

No plans to use Martinez in midfield

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Ruben Amorim issued an update on Lisandro Martinez and quizzed on whether he could even be used as a central midfielder.

The Argentine defender has not featured since he suffered a serious knee injury in the 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on 2 February. Martinez subsequently underwent successful surgery on his cruciate ligament injury and has slowly been making his way back to fitness.

Martinez returned to full United training at the end of October, but the club are not taking any risks with his rehabilitation. The 27-year-old has suffered four major injuries during his time at Old Trafford and has made just 52 league starts since he arrived three years ago. He was eager to play in the previous two matches against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, but the club's medical department decided he needed longer to build up his fitness levels.

"I think a smart intelligent football player can play in a lot of positions, but it is not the position for him," Amorim said at his pre-match press conference. "In an emergency, he can play. I feel Licha is coming close to being able to play. We need to be careful. He is clearly in a better position."
