Sheffield Wednesday's Henrik Pedersen is wary of Sheffield United's 'power'
Sheffield Wednesday youngster Harry Amass is taking full advantage of earning regular minutes at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday loanee Harry Amass has admitted he has tried to block out the club’s off-field situation as he continues to make the most of his time at Hillsborough.
Signed on loan from Manchester United on transfer deadline day right at the start of September, Amass has made an encouraging start to his time in South Yorkshire, making 11 Championship starts, scoring one goal.
The 18-year-old scored his first senior goal in Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat to Southampton at St Mary’s prior to the international break, marking a landmark moment in his career. He took aim from distance and found the bottom corner, pulling the Owls back into the contest after they had fallen 2-0 down early on.
Amass arrived in S6 almost three months ago after United agreed to cover all the finances involved in the deal. The Premier League club was desperate to send him out on loan in an effort to take his development to the next level.
The environment Amass walked into was very different to the one Wednesday currently find themselves in after venturing into administration for the very first time in their history last month. Although the sales process is understood to be heading in the right direction, Wednesday are not out of the woods just yet, particularly on the pitch, where relegation to League One looks like a certainty.
Nevertheless, Amass is fully concentrated on matters on the pitch, admitting he moved to Wednesday with one ambition: to enjoy playing regularly.
Amass not impacted by administration concerns
“I have not really let it affect me,” Amass, appearing on Wednesday’s YouTube channel to answer questions from supporters, said of the club going into administration. “I think I have just come in to enjoy my football, which I’m doing, be part of a team and try and get results.
“All the other stuff, I don’t really let it affect the way I play or the way I think. Nothing really matters when you’re on the pitch, and that’s the way I look at it.”
After originally starting his Wednesday career as a left-back in a back-four, a formation change by Owls manager Henrik Pedersen has since seen Amass used as a left wing-back, allowing him the freedom to get forward and support attacks.
Asked who he is modelling his game on, Amass continued: “I would say I model it now on Nuno Mendes because he is probably the best left-back in the world, in my opinion, now.
“In the past, probably Ashley Cole.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s Steel City derby against Sheffield United at Hillsborough, the former Watford youngster added: “I can’t wait, I have heard very good things about it. I know it’s a massive game, so I am looking forward to it.”
