Jermain Defoe is convinced Benjamin Sesko will be feeling only one way about his start at Man Utd

Jermain Defoe has now explained what must be going through the head of Benjamin Sesko after the Manchester United striker’s start to life at Old Trafford.

Manchester United beat fellow Premier League side Newcastle in the race to sign the 22-year-old Slovenian striker from German outfit RB Leipzig back in August.

The Red Devils dropped an initial fee of £66.3m to land Benjamin Sesko, with United agreeing a deal with RB Leipzig that took the transfer to £73.7m through add-ons.

Sesko, who had been linked with Arsenal in the summer, had become a key target for the Red Devils amid United’s pursuit of a new striking option for Ruben Amorim.

The former Leipzig ace has become United manager Ruben Amorim’s first-choice pick to lead the Red Devils’ attack in the 2025-26 campaign at Old Trafford.

Benjamin Sesko has had a slow start in the early period of his Manchester United career, with the Slovenia striker only netting twice in 12 matches for the club.

The Slovenia international scored in back-to-back Premier League matches in United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford and 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Speaking on the Premier League Productions’ Team Talks, Jermain Defoe feels that Sesko will not be thrilled by his underwhelming goalscoring return for United so far.

Which one striker at their peak would you re-sign for Manchester United right now?

“I mean, if you spoke to him, he would be disappointed because as a centre-forward when you go to a big club at Man United you want to you want to score goals,” he said.

“And I think he’s only got two Premier League goals. No, you’re not going to be happy with that.

“You know, when you look at [that] and one assist, you look at some of the great names that have played for Man United, the goalscorers, and you know, you want to go there and score goals.”

Ruben Amorim provides an update on Benjamin Sesko after the Man Utd striker’s knee injury

Sesko suffered a setback in his first season at United after the former RB Salzburg striker picked up a knee injury ahead of the November international break.

The Slovenian attacker had to come off the pitch late in the second half of United’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Tottenham earlier this month.

Sesko is believed to be out of action for at least a month and Ruben Amorim confirmed the striker would miss the Everton match on Monday evening.

Are you confident Manchester United will beat Everton?

“He is going to stay out for a few weeks, I don’t know how long, but it is not that serious,” Amorim said at Friday’s pre-match press conference, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“We have to be careful with him, he is going to recover, he is doing the recovery and is feeling better. So, in a few weeks, I expect to have Ben [Sesko].”

Sesko’s knee injury in United’s encounter with Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium meant that the striker did not feature in Slovenia’s World Cup qualifiers.
