Gary Neville told Jamie Carragher that he could be 'in trouble' this season as a result of his earlier predictions for the Premier League.

The Manchester United legend was joined by the Liverpool icon for the latest instalment of The Overlap this week, where the two discussed their respective clubs and their recent run of form in the English top flight. When Carragher addressed Liverpool's issues at the back during their conversation, he highlighted how Arne Slot must bring in a centre-half in January.

That opened the door for Neville to ask if failing to do so would allow United to finish above their bitter rivals come season's end, with Carra less than impressed with the playful jab. He replied: "I don't think so," before flipping the ribbing back at Neville.

He added: "You're desperate for that aren't you? He got ridiculed, didn't he, for his predictions? So, I'm well aware every week he's on the phone to people at Sky saying, 'Well, what did Cara say in the predictions? What what did they say?'"

Neville then shut down Carragher's joke, by replying: "Well, my predictions, as we've established in the first day, Monday Night Football are more accurate than yours over time. But I actually think this season you're in a bit of trouble."

In a moment of humour, Carragher then joked: "I'm going to lose my job or something because I got my predictions wrong?" as the group burst into laughter. When asked by Ian Wright what the two were referring to, Neville said: "Well, he had Liverpool winning the league.

"I had United in the top four, didn't I? They could sneak into fifth. Do you reckon they could finish fifth? Get into the Champions League."

Determined not to fold, Carragher then said: "I said they should finish in a Europa League position. No, they won't finish fifth," prompting a blank stare from his long-time Sky Sports colleague, before they shared another laugh.

It comes as Neville may have the last laugh on Carragher, given Liverpool's result against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday afternoon. Slot's side suffered a brutal 3-0 loss at the hands of Forest on home soil, courtesy of goals from Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White.

As a result, they currently sit below Manchester United in the league standings, with the Reds also holding a game in hand considering they aren't set to return to Premier League action until Monday evening, when they face Everton at Old Trafford.

Goal difference is the only thing separating United and Liverpool, who are in 10th and 11th in the league table respectively at the time of writing, although Ruben Amorim will hope to create a gap on Slot's side when they return after the two-week international break.

United and Liverpool have seen contrasting fortunes from their last five fixtures, with United heading into their clash with Everton unbeaten in their last five thanks to wins over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton, as well as draws with Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have managed just one win from their last five Premier League matches, suffering losses to United, Brentford, Manchester City and Forest, with their only victory coming in the form of a 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa.
