Manchester United are getting ready to return to action following the final international break of 2025. The Red Devils host Everton on Monday night, aiming to build on the mini-revival that has eased the pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim.

Following back-to-back wins over Liverpool and Brighton, United were slightly frustrated with draws away to Nottingham Forest and Tottenham. However, following such a troubled start to the season, there are signs that Amorim’s expensive squad is beginning to gel.

Amorim’s surprise at summer signing

Amorim has been left pleasantly surprised by one of his summer signings. The goalkeeper position has been a problem area for United since the departure of David de Gea, with his replacement, Andre Onana, making a string of costly blunders.

Altay Bayındır was given a chance at the start of the season but failed to impress, while Onana was shipped off to Trabzonspor on loan and looks unlikely to play for the club again.

As a result, United brought in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. While it is still early days, the 23-year-old has impressed with some assured performances. Amorim has been delighted to see Lammens look so confident so early in his United career.

He told Stadium Astro: “Of course, we do our diligence when we are going to buy players.

“It was a surprise. All the pressure that we suffer with the goalkeeper position, to arrive here and to show that confidence. To transmit that confidence to the team, I think, was a little bit of a surprise for me.

“I’m not going to say everyone, but I’m talking as a manager. I have no problem to say that was a surprise for me.”

January transfer demand

Club legend Bryan Robson wants to see United strengthen their midfield with another player like Casemiro. Having mainly signed attack players in the summer, the middle of the pitch will be an area of focus for Amorim ahead of the January window.

Former Real Madrid star Casemiro, 33, has come in for criticism in recent seasons amid claims that the Brazilian is past his best. But Robson says he doesn’t get the credit he deserves and would like to see another player of his ilk arrive this winter.

Robson told Sportsboom: “People say he’s not this or he’s not that, his legs have gone. Not for me, Casemiro is still a fantastic player, and he would be on my team sheet every time. I think we’d benefit from another Casemiro-like midfielder, that would definitely help us.”

Robson also believes Kobbie Mainoo could still have a future at the club, despite his lack of game time under Amorim. The former Middlesbrough boss added: “I think the future is bright, the club has some great young players.

“I still think there’s a lot more to come from some of these young players, just look at Kobbie Mainoo.

“He had so many injuries last year, it really was a stop-start season for him, but you look at the year before and he was outstanding for the last six months of the season. There’s a lot more to come from Mainoo and the other young lads.”
