Wolves break silence on Joao Gomes to Man Utd after £44m transfer green light

Wolves boss Rob Edwards maintains there has been no official approach for Joao Gomes despite Manchester United's reported pursuit of the midfielder. Gomes has surfaced as a possible target for the Red Devils as they gear up to revamp their midfield during the summer window.

Casemiro, who has shone in the engine room this campaign, looks set to depart Old Trafford unless fresh terms can be thrashed out. United have the option to prolong his contract by another 12 months, although the club is thought to prefer attempting to reduce his wages rather than activating the extension.

Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Brighton's Carlos Baleba have been touted as United targets, but both stars carry price tags of approximately £100million.

Gomes, however, would command a significantly smaller fee of £44m, particularly should Wolves drop out of the Premier League this season.

The West Midlands outfit recently appointed Edwards as their new gaffer.

Ahead of his maiden match in the hot seat against Palace, Edwards was quizzed about the prospect of Gomes departing Molineux in either January or during the summer window.

He said: "We've spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised. We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I'm not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week."

Wolves suffered a 2-0 defeat in Edwards' debut match, and if this trend persists, Gomes may seek a move to preserve his Premier League status. If United manage to secure Gomes, his arrival would be warmly received by Matheus Cunha.

Cunha has had high praise for his former team-mate, suggesting that Gomes could reach the same level as Casemiro in a green-light transfer verdict.

He stated: "He is a bit older now but I put Casemiro's name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive. I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble, and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that.

"He is unbelievable on the pitch. I feel very secure. I feel like I can lose the ball when I have my midfielders behind me. He played very well for the national team, too."
