‘I’m hearing’ - David Ornstein drops big Newcastle United x Antoine Semenyo transfer update

Newcastle United v Man City - Joe Buck preview

Newcastle United were linked with Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo earlier this year.

Newcastle United are reportedly not in the race to sign Bournemouth sensation Antoine Semenyo.

Bombshell news emerged earlier this week that the winger has a £65million release clause in his Cherries contract. Potential suitors have the first two weeks of the January transfer window to activate the deal, allowing Bournemouth time to find a replacement.

With an impressive 17 Premier League goal contributions this season, Semenyo will have a queue of admirers should he decide to leave. Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked with his signature.

David Ornstein on Newcastle United links

David Orstein, The Athletic’s chief reporter who broke the story about Semenyo’s release clause, has claimed Newcastle are not interested in the wideman. He told his podcast: “Newcastle are hugely ambitious, as per their ownership and their manager, Eddie Howe. They’ve got Champions League football. They want to be winning more trophies after their League Cup success last time round.

“They did strengthen in the wide area with Anthony Elanga on the right side, and that was their priority. They’ve still, of course, got Anthony Gordon to the left. Semenyo is not a name I’ve heard in their sphere so far, and Newcastle, we know, have had to be really careful on the finances.

“They came so close to the edge, which led them to the sale of Yankuba Minteh and also Elliot Anderson. How they, I’m sure, would be ruing that. They seem to have balanced out quite well with the departure of Alexander Isak, but they spent quite heavily on Nick Woltemade.

“So I’m not sure how the finances would work right now with Newcastle. But moreover, I’m not hearing them as, at this moment in time, being in the frame for Semenyo.”

‘I’m an Arsenal fan’ - Antoine Semenyo

Semenyo has already revealed where his club loyalties lie - handing a boost to the current Premier League leaders. He said last year: “I am an Arsenal fan. I don’t conflict the two with my job. It is great to play against Arsenal, a team I have watched all my life and I want to play for the top clubs as well. In order for that to happen I need to prove it.”

Champions League the aim

Arsenal aside, the 25-year-old also set his sights on competing in the Champions League or Europa League. Semenyo added: “Any team that plays Champions League, Europa (League) - that’s the aim. I know that’s not going to come with a click of my fingers, it’s going to take some time.

“It’s going to take goals. It’s going to take a lot of consistent performances. But I’ve worked all my life for that and I’m just going to continue working hard. That’s my mentality.”
