Manchester United have NOT made an approach for Joao Gomes, according to Wolves boss Rob Edwards. The Brazilian features on the Red Devils’ shortlist as they target an overhaul of their midfield under Ruben Amorim.

He features alongside Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Conor Gallagher of Atletico Madrid. With the transfer window just over a month away, United are expected to ramp up their efforts of signing a new midfielder soon.

But as it stands, the Red Devils are yet to make an official approach to Wolves over Gomes. Speaking ahead of his side’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, boss Edwards said: "We've spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised.

“We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I'm not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week."

One man who would be a big fan of Gomes moving to Old Trafford is his former Wolves teammate Matheus Cunha. The forward has compared Gomes to current Red Devils star Casemiro amid glowing praise.

He said: "He is a bit older now but I put Casemiro's name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive. I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble, and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that.

"He is unbelievable on the pitch. I feel very secure. I feel like I can lose the ball when I have my midfielders behind me. He played very well for the national team, too."

Gomes, 24, joined Wolves from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2023 and he has gone on to make 104 appearances for the side since then, scoring seven goals. He only signed a new deal with Wolves earlier this year, that contract set to run until 2030, but it is thought that an offer in the region of around £44m might be enough to facilitate an exit.

Gomes remains far from the only option for United in their task to sign a new midfielder. Nottingham Forest’s Anderson is a priority target - albeit his £100m price tag could present the Red Devils with a significant issue.

Speaking about potential interest in his star midfielder, Forest boss Dyche said: “It is nothing to do with me, it is the powers that be. They run the club and the financial side. I’m sure they will ask my opinion about the situation, if it is needed - not just about him but about all the players here.”
