Manchester United leapfrog Tottenham in the race for 17yo Belgian sensation

Thomas Frank will not push oft-injured Tottenham Hotspur star Dominic Solanke too far.

Thomas Frank will not push oft-injured Tottenham Hotspur star Dominic Solanke too far.

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have seen their club move for some of the most reputed talents in world football since there was this policy shift at Hotspur Way in the final years of Daniel Levy at N17. And the current set of decision-makers at Spurs have continued this chain of strategy as they look to develop these young stars into their potential within the corridors at Hotspur Way.

Ajax youngster Jorthy Mokio has been the latest player to be on that target list at N17. The 17-year-old midfield sensation has already been getting some minutes for the senior side, and his performances have got multiple clubs from the Premier League interested in his signature. Alongside Tottenham, the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle United have been interested in securing his services. And according to a recent report from Caught Offside, Ruben Amorim’s side have leapfrogged the Lilywhites and the Toons in the race to signing Mokio.

Mokio is another rising talent as Belgian football continue to produce gems

Mokio has been linked with Tottenham.

Belgium has been churning out a lot of talents lately. We have seen the likes of Nathan De Cat, Malick Fofana, Konstantinos Karetsas, and Arthur Vermeeren rising into their potential of late. And now Jorthy Mokio is joining that list, showing the set of promising prospects coming through in Belgian football. He joined Ajax’s reputed academy back in the summer of 2024.

And he has seen a bit of first-team football coming his way with the Dutch giants. He has made 29 appearances donning the De Godenzonen’s badge while contributing to a couple of goals in the meantime.

With Yves Bissouma likely being shipped off the roster in the upcoming winter transfer window, there will be an opening for a new midfielder in Thomas Frank’s roster at N17. And given how Thomas Frank wants someone who can smoothen the build-up phase at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, complemented by a presence ahead of that backline, he would like to develop those raw traits into a finished product in Jorthy Mokio.

While Tottenham would like Mokio, Manchester United have a head start in pursuit of him. The aforementioned report suggests that United are “already working on a project that could offer Mokio guaranteed minutes and a clear development path”, and that is something that Tottenham will likely have to compete with.

So if Spurs are serious in their pursuit of his signature, the likes of Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange will have to better that United plan to lure him to N17.
