"My understanding..." - Fabrizio Romano says Man Utd now want to keep £60m star after Amorim…

Manchester United are aiming to keep Casemiro at the club beyond his contract expiry in June 2026, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The Old Trafford side are reportedly looking to extend the Brazilian midfielder’s contract after he emerged as a key player for Ruben Amorim this season, featuring in all but one of their Premier League games so far.

United are claimed to be aiming to renegotiate Casemiro’s current deal, which makes him one of the top earners at Old Trafford, and are hopeful the Brazilian will agree to a reduced salary package.

The Red Devils are also facing a decision over Harry Maguire’s future at the club, with the England international’s contract also expiring at the end of the season.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, revealed that both Casemiro and Maguire situations are ‘really similar’, as United are looking to keep both players ahead of their contract expiry but on reduced wages as they plan to change their salary structure:

“My understanding is that the situation of Casemiro is a really similar situation in terms of strategy to Harry Maguire.

“Casemiro and Harry Maguire are out of contract in the summer of 2026 and for Manchester United, they are two really important players, especially now.

“We have to say congrats to Casemiro. In this video let's focus on Casemiro, because he's been able to change his situation at Manchester United.

“If you think about Casemiro one year ago or a bit more, there was a feeling like, okay, we have to find a solution. We have to part ways. The salary is too high. The player is not performing. He was not an important or crucial player for United.

“But Casemiro has always been a legend of the game. He is the man who made the history of Real Madrid, who made history with the Brazilian national team. So a fantastic midfielder.

“He's been able to change the situation, to become a starter for Ruben Amorim, a crucial player on and off the pitch, an absolute leader, a wonderful version of Casemiro, this final one he is showing with Manchester United.

“So now the desire is from Man United, obviously, to continue with Casemiro, but in different conditions.

“So the salary he has right now is a salary that Manchester United don't want to pay in the future, not because of Casemiro or Maguire, but because they want to change the salary structure.”

Casemiro, who joined United from Real Madrid for £60m in the summer of 2022, has made 135 appearances for the Red Devils so far, scoring 20 goals and providing 13 assists.

His partnership with Bruno Fernandes has been pivotal for Amorim at the start of the campaign, with the duo starting nine Premier League games together so far.

United will be looking to extend their five-game unbeaten run on Monday as they host Everton, who have won just once in their last four games.

Amorim’s side will be without Maguire, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez, while Kobbie Mainoo and Matheus Cunha are doubtful, with the latter suffering a training ground accident.
