Fabrizio Romano has said that Man United want to sign one of their players to a new contract.

The United boss has a lot to think about, other than just matches, however, as he has four players whose contracts are due to expire in June 2026, meaning they will leave as free agents if they don’t sign a new deal. The four names are Tom Heaton, Tyrell Malacia, Harry Maguire and Casemiro.

Maguire and Casemiro are, of course, the biggest losses, as United already signed Maguire to a one-year extension last year due to his old contract expiring, and Casemiro has become somewhat of a mainstay in Amorim’s midfield this season, putting in some much-improved performances.

Romano provides Casemiro contract update

So far this season, the 33-year-old midfielder has made 10 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring three goals and providing one assist. He has cemented his place in the holding midfield role alongside Bruno Fernandes and has become somewhat of a crucial player for Amorim.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Casemiro and Maguire are out of contract in summer 2026, and for Manchester United, they are two really important players, especially now. He’s [Casemiro] been able to change his situation at Manchester United. If you think about Casemiro one year ago, there was a feeling like, ‘we have to find a solution to part ways, the salary is too high, and the player is not performing’.

“He’s been able to change his situation to become a starter for Ruben Amorim, a crucial player on and off the pitch, an absolute leader. The desire is from Man United, obviously, to continue with Casemiro, but on different conditions. The salary he has right now is a salary that Manchester United don’t want to pay in the future, because they want to change the salary structure. The only way to stay would be a different contract; otherwise, he could be free next summer to go wherever he wants.”

Where could Casemiro go if he leaves?

The United midfielder was heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League in the summer, with several reports suggesting that he could join up with former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and move to Al Nassr.

However, based on his improved performances this season, there will no doubt be some interest in the 33-year-old in Europe if he were to leave Man United at the end of the season, but it doesn’t feel like he will end up staying for longer.

United will most likely aim to sign a young holding midfielder in the summer to be the long-term replacement for Casemiro, but keep him around for at least one more year, because of his much-improved form.
