Ruben Amorim revisits 'storm is coming' prediction one year on, says something has changed at Man Utd

It has been a year since Ruben Amorim warned Manchester United fans after beating Everton that a “storm is coming”.

The 4-0 win over Everton last December remains Ruben Amorim’s biggest winning margin as Manchester United head coach 12 months later.

Despite his positive start, Amorim warned of a “storm” based on what he had seen from his players – the following months proved him entirely correct.

Ruben Amorim’s ‘storm’ prediction after last Man Utd vs Everton game

I know it is really hard to be a Manchester United coach and say these things in press conferences. I would like to say different things, but I have to say again, the storm will come.

United recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish and missed out on European qualification because of the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Ineos kept faith in Amorim, though, and there are signs that he is turning things around. In his end-of-season speech, Amorim told fans ‘good times are coming’, and he is starting to deliver.

Ruben Amorim still wary of ‘storm’ at Man United

It is quite fitting that a year on from Amorim’s ‘storm’ warning, he is preparing to face Everton in the Premier League.

United sit 10th in the Premier League table, but victory at Old Trafford could lift the Red Devils into the top four.

Amorim was asked whether his side have weathered the storm in his pre-match press conference.

“I have always that feeling,” Amorim said.

“I think it is also my job, especially in our club, to always have that feeling. That gives me the sense of urgency in every training that I have.

Are you confident Manchester United will beat Everton?

“Playing every game in the Premier League, you sense that everything can change so fast because all the teams can win any game and, if you see the bottom, they have a lot of points.

“Everything can change in one moment, so I don’t like to say the storm is over, but we are prepared. We are more prepared for any storm in this moment, so let’s take this sense of urgency into every game.”

Ruben Amorim is avoiding complacency

Amorim’s response to the question shows just how much he has learned in his first year in charge.

For years now, United have had a consistency problem. A big win is often followed by a head-scratching defeat.

Amorim will know that better than anyone after watching his side lose to Grimsby Town this season but win away at Anfield.

The Portuguese head coach has been eager to instil a ‘next-game’ mentality at United, where players and staff only look as far ahead as the next game.

Having built up a five-game unbeaten run, it seems to be working.
