Man United reportedly want to sign a £44m Premier League midfielder in the January transfer window.
Speaking of January, United are expected to make a move to sign a defensive midfielder, as they are looking for a long-term replacement for Casemiro. The Brazilian star’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and Amorim will be keen to get a replacement in as soon as possible.
Rob Edwards shuts down Gomes to United reports
However, manager Rob Edwards, who recently took over at Molineux, has shut down reports saying that Man United are going after Gomes, as he has said that he’s not aware of any interest at the moment. He was quoted in the Express: “We've spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised. We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I'm not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week.”
Gomes has made an appearance in all 12 of Wolves’ games so far this season, mainly playing a central role. However, his talents best suit a more defensive midfield position, which would be ideal for what Man United are looking for.
Man United expected to offer Casemiro an extension
Casemiro is the highest-paid player at Man United, as he earns around £350,000 per week, and United simply wouldn’t want to extend his contract and still pay him that much, despite his improved form this season under Amorim.
However, it has been said that United will aim to extend his deal, but is hoping the midfielder takes a pay cut, so as not to hand the club such a big financial hit upon signing a new deal. It is understood that Casemiro would like to stay, so it all hinges on whether the two parties can get a deal across the line before the summer.
