Wolves have the chance to do some transfer business when the January window opens up for business

Wolves were beaten 2-0 at home by Crystal Palace in their latest Premier League outing over the weekend. Rob Edwards has recently been appointed as their replacement for Vitor Pereira. The ex-Forest Green Rovers, Watford and Luton Town man left his position as manager of Middlesbrough in the Championship to move to Molineux.

The Midlands outfit are bottom of the table and are winless in their first 12 fixtures. They are inside the relegation zone along with Leeds United and Burnley. They are nine points from safety behind West Ham in 17th position in the league.

Wolves could face battle to keep hold of Joao Gomes

Gomes, 24, has been a key player for his current club since joining them in 2023. Prior to his move, he rose up through the academy at Flamengo. He was a regular for the Rio de Janeiro-based club at various different youth levels before going on to play 122 games for their first-team, chipping in with four goals as a youngster.

He then left South America for a new challenge in England and has since become a key player for Wolves in the middle of the park. He has made 98 appearances in all competitions, nine of which have come this season, and he has found the net on seven occasions. United could see him as someone to boost their options in midfield ahead of the second half of this campaign as they aim to get back into Europe.

Manchester United could offer Wolves swap deal

If Wolves are to sell Gomes to Manchester United, they should try and get one of their players in return plus some cash. Defender Ayden Heaven has found game time hard to come by with the Red Devils this term and wouldn’t be a bad addition. Edwards will want his team to tighten up at the back and the youngster would help strengthen that particular area of the pitch.

Heaven, 19, spent time at West Ham and Arsenal before his transfer to the North West. He joined the latter in 2020 and spent five years at the Emirates Stadium, playing once for the Gunners’ senior team. United then came calling in February and he penned a long-term contract.

The teenager has since featured on nine occasions under Amorim but hasn’t been getting many minutes recently. His development will be stifled if he doesn’t start playing soon so the Red Devils should consider letting him head out the exit door. He would give Wolves something different to pick from and he may feel that he has a point to prove at the top level after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

Edwards’ men are back in action on Sunday as they look to bounce back from their loss to Crystal Palace. Their confidence will be low as they gear up to play Aston Villa at Villa Park. Their upcoming opponents won 2-1 away at Leeds United in their last match after a brace by Morgan Rogers.
