However, even with a man advantage, United were unable to break down Everton’s defence. Ruben Amorim stuck to his 3-4-2-1 shape which included Luke Shaw as a left-sided defender.
As United went chasing an equaliser, Gary Neville was far from pleased with what he saw from Luke Shaw.

Amorim has called Shaw ‘world class’ during their time together at United, but the 30-year-old had a match to forget against Everton.
In his commentary for Sky Sports, Gary Neville was critical of Shaw not bursting forward from his defensive position.

“Shaw is ambling forward,” Neville said.
“It has been bugging me for the last 20 minutes and now I’m just going to say it.
“He is ambling. Look at him. You can’t do that.
“That is a waste of time. Honestly, it’s a waste of time. It’s not conning anyone.”
Ruben Amorim’s back three problem
While Shaw was poor against Everton in and out of possession, his questionable positioning is a symptom of the formation.
The Everton match marked the one-year anniversary since Amorim’s first match, and in that year the Portuguese coach has proven that he will stick to his tactics through thick and thin.

However, with United facing 10 men and chasing an equaliser, many fans will agree with Neville that players should have been given more freedom to attack.
United fans at Old Trafford were chanting ‘attack, attack, attack’, but clearly the message didn’t get through to Shaw.
