Manchester United 0-1 Everton match review and highlights

The latest Man Utd transfer news and gossip as they prepare for the January window under Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United will target an elite midfield option next year in the next stage of their rebuild under Ruben Amorim.

United considered a midfield addition earlier this year but club sources insisted it was never deemed a 'priority' as attention instead turned to improvement in attack. Manchester World understand United will look to sign two midfielders next summer, with at least one of them expected to be a marquee addition to the squad.

Amorim would also like to sign a player with Premier League experience as he believes there is 'less risk' attached to adding someone who has already played in the English top-flight. The United head coach wants to improve the physicality and athleticism of his side and will push to sign one of the top midfielders from the division. Casemiro is expected to depart when his contract expires at the end of the season, while Kobbie Mainoo is desperate to gain more playing time. There is still strong interest in Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte has struggled ever since he joined from Paris Saint-Germain last year.

Romano reveals two elite transfer targets

Manchester United remain interested in a move for Brighton ace Carlos Baleba after they enquired to sign him in the summer transfer window. United made initial enquiries over a potential deal but walked away when the South Coast club demanded a club-record fee in the region of £115 million for his signature.

United appreciate it might take a club-record fee in excess of the £89m they spent on Paul Pogba if they are to add an elite midfielder to their squad next year. There is also interest in Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest talisman Elliot Anderson, who could both command huge fees if they shine in the World Cup with England next summer.

Fabrizio Romano has reiterated United's plans to overhaul their midfield next year and also named Baleba and Anderson as two elite options on their transfer wish list. “At the moment, what I’m told is that the priority for Man United will remain a midfielder," he told the Here We Go podcast.

“Ruben Amorim wants a midfielder in 2026. Obviously, if it’s going to be possible in January better; otherwise, in the summer, but Man United in 2026 will go big on midfielders. It might be one, it might be two, based on opportunities, based on sales, based on what happens with Casemiro in the summer but Man United want to change the situation in the midfield and to add at least one more player.

“So I maintain the name and the number of potentially one, two players. The name of Baleba for sure from Brighton, a player super appreciated by Amorim, they wanted him in the summer. The name of Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest, so Man United are prepared to go big on midfielders in 2026.”
