Manchester United are now really pushing to sign João Gomes from Wolverhampton in the winter window. At least according to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte following earlier reports from the weekend.
The Red Devils want the midfielder this season, and talks between the Premier League clubs have advanced over the past week. Both sides show optimism and expect the negotiation to speed up before the turn of the year.
Globo Esporte say Manchester United have ‘intensified talks’ for the midfielder and amid ongoing negotiations there’s optimism of an agreement.
The operation revolves around €50m (£43m). Manchester United are said to see the 24-year-old as a priority for the second half of the campaign, especially with Casemiro approaching the end of his contract.
João Gomes has been central at Wolves and even wore the captain’s armband this season, but the club’s disastrous run – only two points in 12 fixtures – opens the door for a January exit.
There is growing concern that potential relegation could devalue the squad, which makes a mid-season sale more plausible.
Manchester United efforts now covered by multiple Brazilian sources
Globo Esporte highlight that Wolverhampton paid €19m (£16.2m) to Flamengo in 2023, and the midfielder has since become a fan favourite with 104 matches, seven goals and four assists. His form also earned him a Brazil call-up in October, keeping his World Cup hopes alive.
Manchester United already raided Wolves for a key player this year, spending big on Matheus Cunha. The possibility of another high-profile transfer between the clubs remains on the table, but the next steps depend on whether both sides maintain the current pace of negotiations.
Tuesday’s edition of Brazilian newspaper O Dia also reports the Red Devils are in negotiations with Wolves and preparing their offer.
