Newcastle Links Played Down As“Manchester Clubs”Are Backed To Make“Serious Play”For£90M Rated Midfielder

Newcastle United are unlikely to re-sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, according to the Daily Mail ‘s Craig Hope.

Due to pressures related to PSR, the England international was effectively sold for just £15m. While the Magpies received £35m, they also agreed to buy Odysseas Vlachodimos from Forest for £20m. When assessing whether Anderson could come back, Hope said his asking price is outside of the club’s current budget:

“It would take a fee of around six times that to sign him now. That is not where Newcastle are at right now.”

If we do the maths, that means Anderson‘s valuation is in the £90m range (£15m x 6). Eddie Howe’s side would effectively have to break their transfer record to re-sign him, and that is clearly something they are not able to do.

Man City and Man United are the frontrunners

Hope went on to say that he thinks that Anderson could be off to Manchester in the New Year:

“My instinct is that one of, if not both, the Manchester clubs will make a serious play for him. Don’t be surprised to see interest from Spain, either.”

The Anderson sale looks worse with every passing month

Context is required when discussing why the midfielder left St James’ Park. Under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, homegrown players go down as pure profit on the balance sheet.

With Newcastle up against it in terms of complying with financial regulations, they were effectively forced into selling Anderson (as well as Yankuba Minteh).

While it is fashionable to criticise PSR, it needs to be pointed out that if the club’s owners had increased revenues as they had promised, then there would have been more room to manoeuvre and a lot less pressure to sell players like Anderson.

As it is, it looks like they have allowed one of the most promising young players in English football to leave the club for a pittance.
