Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing a relegation-threatened Premier League midfielder.
Ruben Amorim will be very frustrated that his Manchester United side couldn’t continue their form from before the international break, as their five-game unbeaten streak ended with a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton on Monday night at Old Trafford.
The Man United boss will be further convinced that he needs to make some January signings if his side is to capitalise on other teams’ struggles this season, and potentially climb up into the top four and qualify for the Champions League next season.
Centre-midfield remains a big need for Man United this season, and reports have linked them to a Premier League star, who is currently in a team battling against relegation. He is reportedly tempted by the prospect of coming to Old Trafford in January.
Gomes has head turned by Man United interest
Man United are reportedly interested in signing him in January as they look to add a long-term replacement for Casemiro, whose contract expires at the end of the season. Gomes likes to play a holding midfield role for Wolves, and aged just 24, he still isn’t even in his prime yet, so he could become one of the best in the Premier League in years to come.
Gomes is expected to cost between £40m and £50m, and according to TeamTalk, his head has been turned by the reported interest from Man United, much like Brighton star Carlos Baleba in the summer transfer window.
Rob Edwards squashes Gomes to Man United claims
Wolves have recently appointed Rob Edwards from Middlesbrough as their replacement for Vitor Pereira, with the club currently at the bottom of the league table, having just two points.
The Wolves boss was asked in his first press conference about the reports linking Gomes with a move to Old Trafford, to which he quickly shut down the prospect of the midfielder leaving in January. Edwards said: “We've spoken about stuff, but my focus has been on getting the team organised.
“We have got some good players, and there will always be interest, but I'm not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week.”
It seems that Wolves are firm on their stance that Gomes isn’t for sale, as they clearly think they can still fight against relegation back to the Championship. But, if it still looks bleak for them in January, and Man United were to come in with an offer above £40m for him, it would be a difficult bid to refuse, especially if the player really does want the move to Old Trafford.
