Shearer was on the pitch when a then-teenage Rooney scored an outrageous – and famous – long-range screamer against Newcastle in United’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “And then Wayne Rooney, Man United against Newcastle Old Trafford, when he hit that volley, had the bend.”

“I think he was, but not after that. It was an incredible goal.”
