Manchester United are 'optimistic' about securing a deal to bring Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes to Old Trafford in January, it has been claimed. Ruben Amorim's side are eager to bolster their midfield, and 24-year-old Gomes is high on their list after impressing during his time in the Premier League.

Gomes made the switch from Flamengo to Wolves in a £16.4million deal back in January 2023 and has since then clocked up 93 top-flight appearances, netting six goals while providing two assists. Despite Wolves' lacklustre performances this season, the Brazilian has been a stand-out player, sparking rumours he could depart the club in the winter.

Indeed, as per reports from Brazilian media outlet Globo, United are keen to secure Gomes, who still has four-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at Wolves, during the January transfer window.

It's suggested that the Reds have engaged in discussions about finalising a £44m deal, with optimism from all sides that the transaction will be completed by the end of 2025.

Progress has been made, and United are anticipated to ramp up negotiations with Gomes in the next month, with the Reds keen to seal their swoop in time for the new year. After missing out on a midfielder signing in the summer, Amorim's squad would greatly benefit from the addition of Gomes.

Carlos Baleba topped United's midfield wish-list during pre-season, though the Cameroon international ultimately stayed at Brighton rather than making the big-money switch to Old Trafford. The Red Devils have, also, been linked with Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Angelo Stiller as alternative targets.

Casemiro has established himself as Amorim's preferred No.6 alongside Bruno Fernandes so far this campaign, yet United remain determined to boost up that area despite Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo finding opportunities limited.

The Red Devils had enjoyed a five-match undefeated run before Monday's encounter with Everton. However, they suffered a 1-0 reverse against the ten-man Toffees, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's first-half effort proving enough.

Amorim's men dominated possession after the interval, but couldn't find a breakthrough, resulting in their first loss since September.

"Frustration, disappointment about the way we play the game," Amorim said after the final whistle. "I think they were the better team with 11, they defend really well with 10 men [for] 70 minutes. So I think we deserved to lose, we didn't play well, we didn't play with the right intensity, and that's it."

United now face a challenging fixture away to high-flying Crystal Palace on Sunday. The club's record at Selhurst Park makes for grim reading, with their last victory there coming in July 2020; they've drawn three and lost two of their subsequent five visits.
