Mason Greenwood won praise from the French media following Marseille's 2-1 win against Newcastle in the Champions League, but former Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stole the show as he scored a brace and earned comparisons to Didier Drogba in the process.

Marseille welcomed the Magpies to the Stade Velodrome on Tuesday night and had a nightmare start as Harvey Barnes put the visitors 1-0 up within six minutes. However, former Manchester United winger Greenwood was on hand to spearhead the Ligue 1 club's second-half comeback.

Aubameyang scored a quickfire brace immediately after the restart to eventually win the game 2-1 and took the plaudits from the media.

Le Parisien did note that Greenwood "brilliantly found" the Gabon striker in the first half but the team failed to capitalise on this pressure. Get Football France handed the ex-United man a 5/10 rating, with his strike partner Aubameyang securing a 7/10 for his efforts.

Le Figario noted that Greenwood delivered some "perfect crosses" but it will take some time before the 24-year-old is the number one star at the club. Veteran attacker Aubameyang even received some comparisons to ex-Chelsea hero Drogba, as Le Parisien claimed he "stole the show."

In their match report, the French media outlet said: "He and Drogba have followed different paths, but share a common thread: they both knew how to ignite the Vélodrome.

"They are those great African strikers who carry the city, who instinctively understand what this jersey represents, this raw fervor, this simple and magnificent injunction: to go towards the goal, always.

"Like Drogba in his day, Aubameyang is now one of the providers. In a cauldron of a stadium, he scored more than just a brace: he perpetuated the tradition, he honored the motto, he held Marseille close to his heart. Straight to the point. Always."

Le Figario were also extremely complimentary of the ex-Gunner. They said: "More than 20 years after the OM-Newcastle match in 2004, people in Marseille are still talking about Didier Drogba's exploits in that game.

"That might not be the case for Aubameyang. But his performance on Tuesday was still invaluable."

Marseille joined Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night in defeating English giants, with the Bundesliga team securing a famous 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Barcelona were the only European team not to earn a victory over a Premier League side, with Chelsea thumping the La Liga giants 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
